Just read that a nursing mother should add 300 calories to her daily intake during the first 1-6 months of nursing and 400 calories for the last 8-12 months. Can I do a little happy dance about that?
Sorry I didnt see your comment on my post, but I figured out pretty much what you did. 300 calories extra right now until Eden is 6 months old.
No one is very clear if you are trying to loose weight and nurse - what your calorie range should be. I do know that if you drop too low in calorie intake that your body releases environmental toxin's from your body, into your milk supply. This also happens if you workout with a heart rate over 170 (I think) - whatever the anaerobic heart rate is. Obviously I dont want my milk quality to suffer for my daughter just because I want to loose weight. So trying to balance eating enough without eating too much and working out hard enough without working out too hard has been hard and plays games with my psychie.
I have been using babyfit at sparkpeople to track my eating, but I think their calorie recommendations for nursing moms doesnt take into account trying to loose weight. So what I finally ended up doing is figuring out what it should be to loose weight if I wasnt nursing, and then just adding my 300 calories onto that. I hope it is low enough for me to loose weight. It still seems like so many calories compared to what my mind thinks I'm suppose to eat. it is all a mental game for me right now!
Rebekah, I think if you add exercise to what you are doing calorie wise you should see some results. Remember, it's going to happen slowly but it will happen.
Samantha! Thanks for that info! There are a few of you out there. I'll make sure everyone gets it incase they don't see your post.
ReplyDeleteI guess this means a couple extra pieces of something yummy...to bad it can't be ice cream.
