Doing It The Right Way . . .

I spoke with a member of my extended family yesterday who has always tried the latest fad diet.  She typically loses weight and gains it back.  She is currently on  a controversial diet that involves putting drops under the tongue and a diet restricted to 500 calories a day. I couldn't even wrap my brain around that tiny number, so I had to look the diet up and see what 500 calories amounted to.  This is it:
  • Breakfast: Coffee or tea with artificial sweetener and one tablespoon of milk.
  • Lunch is 100 grams of lean meat, poultry or fish in addition to one low-glycemic vegetable like spinach, celery, cucumbers or cabbage. One Melba toast and one fruit like half of a grapefruit or an apple is also allowed.
  • Dinner is the same as lunch.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that this just doesn't seem healthy to me. There are other aspects of this program that just creep me out that I'm not going to go into.  I will say this, in my head, as I was listening to the regimen she is dealing with, all I could think is, "Thank you Healthy Wife, Happy Life".

I feel really great about what we are accomplishing in this challenge.  I feel very uplifted and supported by all of you and your stories of successes, failures and the reality of trying to live a more healthy life over all. And I truly do believe that eating sensibly and exercising the body on a regular basis are the best steps towards feeling healthy.

  1. Tell your extended one to join us here. Her current choice sounds impossibly hard...and short lived.

  2. Wow, I can't even imagine only eating 500 calories in one day. I did a fad diet once that took me down to 1000 calories and I thought that was nearly impossible.

  3. That 500 calorie diet is psycho! A few ladies in town have done it and one lost 30 pounds in 4 weeks. OK fine, you want to look really cute on your vacation, but seriously? How are you going to feel about yourself when you gain back 30 pounds in a month? My mantra is not to do anything with my weight loss that I can't maintain.

  4. Yo yo dieting is bad, bad, bad. Diets that restrict food groups are bad, bad, bad. Diets that restrict calories to unsafe, unhealthy levels are bad, bad, bad. Fad diets, BAD! The only reasons to cut out any food, in my opinion, would be allergies or doctors orders. In the world we live in people are looking for that the fast easy fix.

This blog is providing a life changing fix. Cut calories, eat healthy, and exercise. It may take some of us a year or more to reach our goals but hopefully at the end we will have changed how and what we eat and will have made exercise a habit for life.

The diet you mentioned is just plain nutty!

  5. Okay I just wrote this brilliant comment and lost it.

    I'm off to the gym.

The diet mentioned in this post is just plain nutty.

There is no fast and easy way to be fit and healthy.

Diets that restrict food groups and unhealthy calorie intake are BAD, bad, BAD! Fad diets are BAD, bad, BAD!

We're doing it the right way ladies so lets stay the course. We are renovating ourselves and creating good healthy habits for life!
