Favorite Cooking Gadgets For Healthy Living

Okay, this kind of feels like a lame post, but I really need some info on wheat grinders. My current favorite kitchen gadget for healthy living is definitely my digital kitchen scales (you can tell by its "well-used" appearance.) I am weighing things all the time. It's what helps me determine portion sizes for recipes, and then helps me figure out how many calories that piece of banana bread really has, instead of just making a vague guess. Sue, Santa Claus the Easter Bunny the Birthday Fairy might have to get you one of these. Speaking of which, does anyone want a handmade b-day card on their b-day? You could post your birthday here, too.

But now that I'm cooking with more whole grains, for the first time I need a wheat grinder, because I'm going to be going through a lot of whole wheat flour, and I want to grind my own, maybe even become creative with other grains. Any of you have experience with one?

And feel free to post here about your own favorite kitchen gadget for healthy living.

  1. I have a Wondermill wheat grinder and love it. It is supposedly one of the quietest ones out there but if you ask my husband and kids it is still really loud. I have had it for about three or four years and have no complaints.

  2. I love my digital scale but you're a true woman if you want to grind your own wheat. Wow! Looks like Cammy has a good one. Let us know how it goes.

And....put up some of those whole wheat recipes.

  3. I grind my own wheat as well but I'm on the lookout for a new grinder. I've got a very old hand-me-down. I'm pretty sure I'm missing some parts because I have to hold it shut during the grinding process or it comes apart.

My sister-in-law cooks with lots of grains and sends out newsletters chuck full of info showcasing a grain and provides yummy recipes. When she does I can forward them to you if you're interested.

  4. My kitchenaid grinds wheat, but I've never used it.... Let me know though, because, although I probably won't be as ambitious as you all, if I ever need my food storage, I'll have to grind the wheat with a mortar and pestle (or whatever they're called).

  6. My favorite cooking gadget I guess would be my oven, I'm addicted to roasted veggies.

After moving wheat around for 20 + years I got rid of it. I'm into 100 calorie whole wheat bagel thins or sandwich thins which I don't bake but buy. When I do bake I confess I want something made with that unhealthy nasty white flour....am I bad?

The digital kitchen scale fascinates me, do I need one?

  7. A digital kitchen scale is the only way to go. Anything that involves measuring is in high use for me these days

I am excited to say that I've finally converted my whole family to wheat. We eat wheat everything: pasta, bread, pancakes, tortilla shells. I used to hate wheat because it always seemed so dense, but I've really enjoyed the healthy flavor now. I haven't braved the wheat grinding yet. I want to, but I don't even know where to start. I've been buying my own wheat flour. I know if I ground it myself it would be even more healthy.

  8. I will try to do a post with some more info on grinding your own wheat a little later. It really isn't as intimidating as it seems.

  9. I love my wheat grinder... it is a nutrimill. I bought it with a Bosch to make bread and I haven't bought bread since! I LOVE using hard white wheat because it has the same nutrients but comes out much lighter and fluffier. I even bake cookies with it. Way to go on eating better. I don't even like white flour things anymore! Good luck
Seriously, fresh ground wheat bakes so much better... our neighbors don't even realize what they are eating:)
