Novice Mistake

This morning was picture perfect.  As a "challenge" novice, my fridge is not yet fortified with all things healthy but I did have some frozen fruit so I made myself and my son a healthy shake.  I ran out the door to meet my sisters and their kids for a fun morning at Wheeler Farm then back to my sisters for some egg-dying out in the sun.  We got the kids Happy Meals which are super easy for me to ignore but not being prepared to deal with my own hunger aches I reached for leftover 7-layer dip and the Pie Pizza from my sister's fridge.  Ugh!  The only silver lining that I can conjure is that I only had half a piece of pizza.  Could have been worse, right?

So after Logan's nap I am dashing off to the store to load up on calorie conscious foods that I can grab on the go.  Any suggestions?

  1. Pack your lunch if you can. Or order a salad from McD's with the dressing on the side (and use half or less). Or bring a healthy no-prep snack to tie you over: fruit, nuts, whole wheat pretzels, power bar.

  2. I keep roasted soy nuts in my purse, I premeasure one of those snack bags. I also carry a protein bar just in case I decide to stop for lunch with Sam while I'm out running errands.

You can't go wrong with fruits, veggies....I personally make a protein shake in the afternoon to keep myself in check until dinner! I pack it with fruit and spinach!

  3. I almost always carry a protein bar in my purse with me even if I don't think I'll be hungry. It's so awful when you are hungry and don't have a healthy choice. You are doing great! Making a concious effort is a great start.

  4. Great ideas. I like the idea of a protein bar and nuts. Something I can leave in my purse without spoiling. What brand of protein bar do you guys like? Every time I look for one I'm overwhelmed by the choices and when I look at the sugar I'm wondering if some of them are even that good for me.

  5. Audrey, I know you would have some good recommendations for power bars for
Jenn. I liked the one you brought over for me, and I can't remember what kind it was, but it was so yummy. Jenn, I have tried the CLiff bars from Costco. They are yummy too, but I don't know how they compare to other ones.

  6. I really like packing string cheese when we go out but that isn't something you can just leave in your purse. Pretzels are good but I have to pre-pack them in the correct portions so I don't eat to many. I also like craisins when I get a sweet tooth and the nice thing is they don't melt in the car. Oh and if you are going the fast food route I really like Wendy's Ceasar salad from their value menu (it used to be $1 but now it is 1.50) Trail mix is always good (once again packaged in the correct portion size.)

  7. Thanks, everyone! My fridge is now arrayed with healthy choices.

Cammy, I'm so excited to be in contact again! You were by far my best work out buddy. I miss running behind your heels when I'd get too tired. I have yet to find a replacement as worthy as you!
