Tired of Excuses...Even Really Good Ones!

So I want to give you a quick run down...I have committed to my first 5K run on May 2nd. Now before you groan and think...yippee that's only like 3 miles let me tell you just a tiny bit why this is a HUGE goal for me and part of my goal for this challenge. I gained a pretty large amount of weight with my first two babies. After my second I started to work out and eat right and lost 18 pounds. I was on my way to my honeymoon body. My baby was diagnosed with liver cancer at 6 months old. My world stopped dead in it's tracks. My health was put in the very back of the closet while I attended to him night and day. During his treatments I found out I was pregnant (while on the pill). Then we were told the tumor was not resectable and not responding to chemo...no other choice but a liver transplant. He was 10 months old at the time. Post liver transplant care was around the clock...I ate all the comfort food that was delivered (thanks Marci :) and my stress level was through the roof. I had very little sleep each night and filled my free moments with more food. More than half way through the pregnancy...oops did you know you are having two babies? A small nervous breakdown and more food followed. It has been rough and that is my excuse. I am now about 80 pounds more than I would like to be and that is a conservative number. I have some pretty good excuses, but that is exactly what they are now...and now I am setting goals for me. It's really hard to lug this extra 80 pounds around and especially get it running...but I'm gonna do it!!! And it might sound corny, but I'm doing it for Luke as well. He's been through more in 2 years than I have in 35. So, my personal goal for this challenge is to work on my training everyday to run that 5K and then on to a 10K!! Thanks Marci for your constant encouragement...you are a true friend :) Oh...I almost forgot the happy ending...Luke has been cancer free for 1 year and the twins are perfect in every way! So...lets BUST IT OUT ladies!!!

  3. I am so proud of you!!! I can totally relate to the eating your stress away. Especially when you are sitting in a hospital room wondering if your child is going to live another day! I am so glad Luke is doing so well and your twins are too. This is YOUR time to shine my friend!!! My daughter has had 2 bone marrow transplants. It really is amazing how much our kids have gone through. I am sure Luke is like my Emily, very headstrong and determined to LIVE! This is a great blessing but not always easy to live with :)
Good luck with your training, you will do AWESOME! There are some great tips on Runners World... I always like to look at all the different ideas and stories. Keep up the great work, YOU CAN DO IT!!!

  5. Jen, it's amazing the challenges that get thrown at us in life, YOU obviously are an amazing woman and mom, happy to read that Luke is doing so well. As my husband went through cancer treatment two years ago we both agreed that the true cancer heros are children.

You can lose those 80 pounds by counting calories and exercising, I've personally seen someone I know do just that in one year. She went from a size 22 to a size 6/8 losing over 80 pounds After two years she has kept the weight off ....she is a healthy wife with a happy life. YOU CAN DO IT TOO! You have the skills.... just apply that support, determination and love you've been giving to your children to YOURSELF. Run Jen, Run!

  6. Jen, I am sitting here with goosebumps on my skin chanting in my head, "You go, girl!" Your excuses are valid. But your time is NOW. We all support you and are going to keep giving you kudos and love.

ps. I ran a 5K as a slim, healthy 32 year old and I sucked at it big time . . . I have nothing but admiration for your goal.

  7. Jen, I know most of your story from our wonderful mutual friend Marci. You truly amaze me. I hope that you reach all of your goals as you continue to be a great mother, wife, friend and most of all believer in one's self. It's important to take care of one's self to continue to take care of others!

Thank you for sharing your story with everyone. I don't know how you do it with so many little ones. You're a great example.

Keep running girl and I'd love to do that 10k with you if you do one on a Saturday.
